Great history of comics in America. Les Daniels improved greatly as a writer after this book. There is, for instance, his far superior work Living in Fear. Some of his comments seem awfully obvious reflecting a sort of deep-as-an-ashtray analysis. This is, however, an interesting work although it is highly selective in giving a history of American comic books. Published in the early 70s, it is interesting as an artifact of its time, with very much of a 60s “Pop” underground feel to it in the commentary, in some of the comics that are reprinted (and there aren’t many), and in the book’s overall look.
